Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can happen after you go through a severe trauma. Treatment is available. Along with therapy (also called counseling), medicine may help manage your symptoms.

You may have PTSD if you've been through a traumatic event and are having trouble dealing with it. Such events may include a car crash, rape, domestic violence, military combat, or violent crime. While it's normal to have some anxiety after such an event, it usually goes away in time. But with PTSD, the anxiety is more intense and keeps coming back.

A traumatic response in a child can change their sleep schedule or behavior. A child with emotional trauma also might become violent or lose interest in things they once enjoyed.
